Visit to a Razor factory: DOVO, SOLINGEN

A Journey to Solingen: Exploring the Craft of Dovo Straight Razors

Greetings, shaving enthusiasts! Today, we embark on a thrilling adventure to Solingen, the holy city of steel and the birthplace of everything sharp – from nail clippers to scissors, potato peelers, and beyond. However, what captures our attention the most is the artistry behind crafting the iconic straight razor, and there's no better place to witness it than in Solingen, home to numerous steel factories, including the renowned Dovo, with a legacy spanning centuries.

Arrival: Unveiling the Craft

Picture a drizzly day setting the stage for a warm reception as our entire team from ROMAIN Barbershop arrives at the back entrance of the Dovo factory. Prompt and efficient, we're greeted by the factory owner, Jens, initiating our German-guided tour. Having previously visited Fontani's knife factory in Scarperia, Northern Italy, we quickly grasp the magnitude of Dovo's operation – larger, more organized, and still exuding a unique charm. Jens proudly reveals that the factory recently moved to a restored section, featuring offices in a refurbished old hall that radiates industrial history.

Our journey takes us to the heart of the factory, where the intricate process of crafting a straight razor unfolds. Each razor is meticulously handcrafted, making each piece unique. Jens, the enthusiastic new owner, shares his pride in the revamped production plan, emphasizing increased attention to finishing, enhanced quality control, resulting in a superior straight razor. The shift from the previous owner's mass production mindset to a focus on quality is evident, with every blade manually sharpened on natural stones by highly skilled artisans.

Perfection: Attention to Detail

The owners' passion for detail and their deep expertise instantly resonates with us. Their meticulous approach extends even to safety razors, with a level of craftsmanship that seems unbelievable given the reasonable pricing. Trust us; it's a must-have addition to your shaving arsenal!

Returning to the office, we find ourselves surrounded by the inviting aroma of coffee and German pastries. As we delve into discussions about the past, a broad smile spreads across everyone's faces. An enormous collection of unused vintage razors emerges, igniting the desire in each of us to own a piece of this shaving history. It's a nostalgic moment, a reminder that our past is a valuable lesson, shaping the future of designing modern yet timeless straight razors. Jens proposes a collaboration on this exciting project, an honor we graciously accept, and more details will follow in the future.

Closing the Day: A Taste of Germany

The day concludes with a visit to a typical German restaurant, where copious servings of beer and hearty meals create a fitting end to our successful expedition. We've gleaned valuable insights into the world of blades, craftsmanship, and the enduring significance of authenticity. Working in a niche industry, our beautiful city of Ghent and even our beloved Belgium sometimes feel too small. Hence, we choose to communicate our experiences in English, ensuring this captivating story resonates internationally within our unique niche community.

Stay tuned for more updates on our collaboration with Dovo and the exciting innovations brewing in the world of straight razors!
